Hi there,
Occasionally, when I try to import a jpeg, the image only appears in the wizard as a black rectangle (which continues if the import is completed). I have no idea what I need to change or why only some jpegs are affected and would love any help with this that you can offer!
Thanks in advance! |

It could be that the pattern is so large that when compressed to a single page blurs all the symbols and gives a black image.
I never use that feature so I can't say for sure.

Hi Diane,
Thanks for the response. I am not sure if I explained the issue properly, though.
When attempting to import a jpeg to create a pattern, the image (and then the pattern if I tick to show the preview) sometimes only show up in the import wizard as a black rectangle the shape of the source. Almost as if the jpeg data cannot be read so it defaults to a black space. The file sizes are not large and it seems to only happen on some files. But I can't figure out how to fix it or what the specific problem with the source jpegs might be.
I would really love to know how to fix this, as I prefer to create outside of PCStitch and then tweak once an image is imported... but this bug seems to want to stop me doing that with certain images.

What is the size in pixels of the jpg. If it's too large, then that could still be the issue -- squeezing it down too far.
The best case is to shrink the jpg to the pixel dimensions the same as the final project stitch dimensions. For example, an 8X10 project on 14 count aida would be 112 X 140 stitches and therefore 112 X 140 pixels. It looks tiny but a 1/1 ratio of pixel to stitch gives the best quality first cut of a pattern.
Remember - first cut. You still need to do a lot of tweaking to get just the pattern you want. The software just gives you the first cut.

Thanks, Diane.
The jpegs are not very large to start with, but I took one of them down to the pixel to pixel size and tried to upload it and it still only shows as a black square in the import wizard. I don't think it has anything to do with the size of the file/image. (This specific image is also just an outline, so simple black line drawing that I was then going to fill and flesh out in the pattern. Because I know that an import is not the end step!)
Other jpegs will import just fine (even ones that are significantly larger) but every now and again certain files will not and I don't know why or how to change it. It can get quite frustrating!

I don't know what you're using to view/modify your jpgs but I have an idea. If you are not using Irfanview, I suggest you try that -- http://www.irfanview.com/
I suggest getting the main product and possibly the plug-ins. I am running on a 64 bit machine but I'm using the 32 bit version of this product.
I have found that many jpgs change properties (but not the image) if you load it into Irfanview and then SAVE it (change the name slightly). That may work for you for these rare images that won't import properly. There is probably something in the image characteristics that PCStitch can't handle.

Thanks again, Diane. I have been using Photoshop to make any alterations (which should be more than capable as an industry accepted leader) but can view the files in any number of other programmes without issue. I don't particularly want to have to download yet another bit of software if I can avoid it. Do you know if there is somewhere we can get technical help? User forums are great, but if I can get in touch with someone who knows the ins and outs of the software's back end, I think that might be my best bet for figuring out exactly what is going on. (I am fairly computer savvy, but this one has flummoxed me.)
Thanks, Kim |

The reason I suggested Irfanview is I've found there are some photo characteristics hidden in a jpg file that often make the file much larger than the actual image. I've seen files shrink by more than 50% by just opening and saving using the default JPG parameters. That's what I was talking about.
As for technical support, there is a "Contact Us" point for such questions but I don't know how fast you get a response. Some have complained that they don't get a response but that is most likely an error on their part -- mistyping the return email address!

Thanks, Diane. The images are only a few hundred kb, so it can't be the size of the file that is a problem. I have definitely imported larger and more complex files. I guess I will have to send the query to the people at the contact page and hope that they have an answer. Thanks for trying. Kim |

I had the same problem trying to import in a .png file - other .png files would work fine while this one wouldn't. I've managed to get around it by saving them as .tif files instead, you could try saving the images in another file format to see if that helps. |

It's not nothing to do with this case but just an example of what appears to be a simple file that displays fine may not be so simple.
I have a PDF file that I tried to print ONE page (of 8). The display of that page was fine. The resulting print -- a total page of black ink! What a waste!
I decided not to try tricky things like printing to a PDF to make a new one or converting it to another form. I got the information I needed from the file and it will be deleted.
