is there a way to count the box prior to the stitch and mark the box before with a number?

The markings on the edges for the stitches (whatever unit of measure) is not within our control. You can't set the counter otherwise but you CAN put blank stitches around your item. You can even add so many rows and columns after you complete the pattern and then "center" it to force the blank spaces.

That's the best you can do.
