| I keep getting the message "Outside the bounds of array" and then I can't make any changes on my pattern. I also keep getting other error messages, sometimes to the extent that the pattern is unopenable. We have done everthing - reinstalled the program, wiped and rebuilt our computer many times and even bought a brand new computer. The PC Stitch people have told me to try doing things I have already done to no avail such as reinstalling pattern pieces, etc. They don't really seem to be very supportive. Has anyone heard of the program PatternMaker for Cross Stitch. If PCStitch programmers can't fix their problem, I may switch. The reviews on that program are better than PC Stitch anyway and the price is similar. Any comments? |

I only have the free viewer program of PatternMaker and the full version of both PCStitch Standard and PCStitch Pro (as well as PCStitch Lite).
My personal opinion is that PCStitch is easier to use and more powerful. PatternMaker has been on version 4 for at least 3 years now and does not seem to be progressing towards improvement. The tools in PCStitch are much more powerful and for me, easier to use.
I do not really like the display options on PatternMaker and the way it mixes the view of the pattern and the instructions. They should NOT be keyed into the same zoom level!
I use PCStitch on an older operating system with very limited memory. I have not had any major problems with it. The occasional, error message if I move the mouse funny or delete all my colors while preparing to set up a new palette, yes; major problems NO.
In my experience, reading what others have used, PCStitch is by far, more popular than PatternMaker. Also, as far as freebies available on the internet, PCStitch far outstrips Patternmaker in terms of availability. I have PatternMaker Viewer (4.04) for the purpose of the freebies that are in .xsb format (I rename Patternmaker 3 files from .pat to .xsb to prevent the conflict between the two programs).

We are getting ready to release a major update to PCStitch Pro that is quite a bit different internally and may resolve some of your problems. If you want to try it, download the file at http://www.pcstitch.com/files/pcstitchpro2_inst.exe . You should uninstall the version that you have first.

I can tell you that I use pattern maker pro and its a dream. Wonderful.
I also look forward to the pc stitch pro update as well. |

| Mark, I downloaded the program that you suggested and tried remaking a pattern that I had problems with. Its a tree skirt with the nativity bears from Patterns Online. I set the stitches as usual, then opened the Mary pattern. I selected the whole bear and copied and pasted it into the new pattern. It pasted into the upper left hand corner. Then when I tried to move Mary into place but I could not move it. Why? This is something that happened in the old program after a while but never with the first thing I paste into the pattern. What am I doing wrong? |

Can you tell something about Pattern Maker. I would like to know if there are as many patterns to download as PC Stitch has. That is one thing I like about PC Stitch. Patterns online has almost unlimited patterns. That's a real plus. If I did not have the problems I am having with this program, I would never consider another one. |

Although popular, PatternMaker does not have any where near the free patterns available as does PCStitch.
I am administrator of one board (www.cross-stitch-board.com) that dropped support of PatternMaker formats more than 2 years ago and just kept PCStitch because it was much more popular. We currently have around 200 free patterns. Cyberstitchers also only supports PCStitch and it has hundreds of free patterns.

The Nativity Mary pattern from PatternsOnline is a Read Only design, meaning that you can't make changes to it or put it other patterns. This is a restriction that can be put on the patterns by the designer before we are allowed to sell it on PatternsOnline. This is what is causing your problem.

| Mark, I am not making any changes to any of the Nativity patterns. All I am doing is putting them all into one pattern. I have done it many times before with read only patterns. In fact I made a small tree skirt with these same patterns, copying and pasting them into the larger pattern and then moving them into place as I please. I have even been able to move parts of the patterns and mirror them, but now I could not even move the first one I copied into the tree skirt. Why? |

Putting patterns together into a single pattern is considered a change. Sometimes just a zoom is considered a change.

Diane is right. Putting them together is considered a change. I believe that there was a bug earlier that may have let you do it when we weren't supposed to.

| I appreciate this information. I had no idea that copying and pasting a read only pattern into another pattern was not acceptable. Even though I had no intentions of changing anything in the patterns, it does make sense that they would want to prevent people from copying and pasting. But now that you say it, it does make sense. I will just have to make this tree skirt using sevaral separate patterns instead of one big one. Thanks. |
