What form of display are you using? If you define the display to be symbols only, do you see the symbol? In that case, the actual color should not be an issue.
I normally use symbols over colors and in that case, if the color is dark, the symbol is usually white over the dark color.
How many symbols are involved? Some of the addresses in the font are not defined and if you are using one of them, you might see a blank.
