I thought it might be good if I let you know what the main new features are in PCStitch 11. Here is a copy of the What's New help file topic:
All of the components of PCStitch 11 have been upgraded to work with all of the newer versions of Windows, including Windows 10!
PCStitch 11 includes floss lists from all of today's most popular manufacturers! Floss lists are available from DMC, Anchor, Week's Dye Works, Crescent Colours, Threadworx, Caron, Kreinik, and many more.
With the multitude of new flosses available, many contain variegated flosses with lots of color variations. PCStitch 11 now has a new display for variegated flosses to give you a better idea how they will look in your designs!
PCStitch 11 has a new ribbon bar interface that makes finding and using the PCStitch tools easier and more intuitive! Anyone familiar with this modern style interface can pick up using PCStitch in a flash.
When you create new patterns by importing or adding colors to your own palette, the symbols chosen are selected based on relative brightness to the colors. When you view the pattern in symbols or look at the printout, you can easily see how the symbols are going to relate to the finished project, which makes stitching it much easier!
You no longer need to bring up a separate window to see the stitch counts. When you move your mouse over a color in the palette window, you can see how many stitches are of that color in the status bar at the bottom of the screen!

I have one question that my testing hasn't answered.
How do you get it to display variegated floss properly. In my testing, it shows all the same color. I've tried to define several such colors (DMC low numbers) and each one has all stitches showing the same. I can't find the new "display for variegated flosses".
Both the edit field and the "view pattern" show them all as the same color.

Actually, it should be automatic, but the floss needs to have been defined as variegated in the floss list with the floss editor. All of the variegated flosses should have been correct with the new version.

OK, Mark,
I think part of my problem was the merging in of the old myriaCross flosses. I've removed the DMC ones and noticed that your new definition of DMC Stranded starts at 150 and you have a second floss definition of DMC Variegated with the lower numbers (48 - 125) that are variegated.
To be sure - I also uninstalled/re-installed the software - with all updates.
Each one of these flosses show a bit of variation in each stitch (kind of a herringbone or cross-hatch pattern in the display of the "block") but still each stitch is identical to every other stitch of that color.
Is the variation to which you refer that within each stitch or from stitch to stitch. That could be a confusion point.

I have looked at it. Looks very good. but I lack the search option at the colors that was 9 there. Is there also an option to operate it simultaneously on 2 PC? Have a laptop and a home. On the way I work a lot on it and above ground it then on the Home PC. So far I have Is it on both 11 to have a 9 and the other 10?

You can have it on multiple machines concurrently but they are still separate. The files accessed are individual. If you wish to work on the same pattern in both machines, you will have to copy it back and forth or network them. I don't have a network so I do not know if any version of PCStitch can access a file across a network.

Unless you over-ride and say to put it in the same place as you put PCStitch 10, it will not over-ride. The default is to put it in a folder named "PCStitch 11" where the older version is, by default, in a folder named "PCStitch 10". The default folder for the program is "Program Filed (x86)" (for 64 bit machines -- drop the "(x86)" if it's a 32 bit machine). Just for info - I change that folder if I can do it at all. In this case, I put it in a folder that I created called "Products/Hobbies" and then the PCStitch 11 folder.
In either case, the floss files are separate, using the 10/11 naming convention as well. All you should need to do is to go to the correct folder in "ProgramData" and copy it from the 10 version to the 11 version. Note -- ProgramData is usually hidden so you may have to go to the folder options and make it visible while you work. You can leave hidden files showing or you can "unhide" this folder and then hide the hidden folders again.

I'm having problems with the symbols in pcstitch 11. It looks like the 'PCStitch Symbols' font is no longer working, therefore it goes to some random other font which does not work as well. It says that the pcstitch symbols font is not a True Type font therefore cannot be used. But this worked fine with pcstitch 10 and that also required TTF fonts. I dont understand why its not working now. How can I get this font working in pcstitch 11? |

Exactly where are you trying to use the fonts, as a stitched font or as symbols.
I'm using PCStitch 11 and have had no problems with the font when used as symbols. I am running under windows 7.
Could you give a few more details as to what you are trying to do when it fails as well as your operating system and so forth?
thanks,

I'm using windows 7 also. It has started working again now - I was trying to use the font as symbols for floss colours. I opened a pcstitch 10 design I had previously created and it somehow started working for fonts from then on! weird, but brilliant its working again.
Only problem is that when all the pcstitch font symbols have all been allocated to a floss colour the software automatically then chooses the next font within the pcs font library, starting alphabetically with a. Unfortunately the first few font names on my pc which begin with the letter a all require clipping when being used in software which means that only half the font is showing in pcstitch as symbols. You can usually adjust the clipping in software such as word or inkscape etc, but pcstitch does not allow for this. This means that I am restricted to the number of floss colours I can use in any design to the number of pcstitch font symbols there are, which is very frustrating as its not giving as much detail as I want in some of my designs. Obviously, I can change each floss colour symbol one by one but with the number of floss colours I use, this takes forever.
Is it possible to incorporate this re-clipping ability in to the next software update or at least make it possible for us to choose which fonts it will automatically progress to once the pcstitch font symbols have all been allocated? Or maybe just add more pcstitch font symbols to match the number of floss colours in all the floss ranges? Or even allow for otf font files to be used in pc stitch, as currently only ttf files can be used.
Ideally it would be super useful if we could choose the font it defaults to after pcstitch font symbols have all been allocated.
Thanks

Sonina,
I don't think I've ever had a case where a pattern needed more symbols than a font had available. I think your experience is very rare. Is it possible to split up your pattern in a way such such a long list of colors is not needed?
Personally, I don't think I even want to think about stitching with that many colors on a single project. The default font has 223 in the symbol table but 6 of them are just a series of dots. I don't know if it's been fixed but there used to be several duplicates in the symbols font. That still leaves you with over 200 colors for a single project. For some, that's probably fine, but for me -- I'll take simpler projects. Again, that's just me.

Is it possible to turn this off? I don't like having to hunt for my symbols on my chart every time, nor do I want to have to spend an hour re-arranging 200 symbols before I print it.
And no, it's not "very rare" for people to want to do a project with a lot of colours. Please don't assume that just because you don't do large projects, the people using your software don't like to do large projects. |

It is not possible to turn off the auto-setting of symbols. What algorithm is used to define those symbols is not something I know.
What you CAN do is define your own "palette" of colors with the symbols you want for those colors ONCE, save that as the default palette. If you don't use all the colors in any given pattern, you can remove those that aren't in use.
This should give you your cake and eat it too -- the colors you want, the symbols you want, over and over for every pattern.
Note -- this feature is NOT new to this version. It has been available since I first started using PCStitch (version 7) back in 2004.
