Hello,

I was making a pattern the other day, when I found that a certain DMC colour that looked fine in my real life cross stitch, looked horrendous in the program. It was if they were two different colours. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there something I'm doing wrong, or a different explanation for this?

Thanks,
C

Colors as seen by a computer are different than what we see in real life. If you think a color is wrong (it has the wrong color definition), then try to determine what the correct definition is and contact Mark about it and maybe a future update will correct the definition of the palette entry.

You can update it for yourself using the Floss editor. It's a separate product but included product for all versions of PCStitch except PCStitch 10. 10 has it built-in.

Hello

I've been having a similar problem. I've imported an image of a painting into the software and the vast majority of the colours in the pattern look just right. However, in areas of shadow the colours are shown as large patches of horrid brown!! If I were to stitch it using the suggested colours, will it turn out to look like the original image (as it should) or how it appears in the pattern preview?

Also, I notice that the colour palette uses exactly 300 Anchor colours for this pattern. Should I be suspicious of this round number - is there a limit to how many colours it will select - or is it simply a coincidence?

I can't afford to make a mistake here as my project is a whopping 206,000 stitches!

Thank you
Caroline

Caroline,

When you start an import, you tell it how many colors to use MAX. You also give it percentages for how many colors to use for foreground and background. If the design is colorful or complex, the more colors will be used. You obviously told it a max of 300 colors and it felt it needed all of them.

As for the horrid brown -- there are only so many shades of ANY color no matter what palette you are using. It does what it can to match the computer's estimate of the color but there are times it just can't. I did one once that was in black/white and some of the shading was a bright yellow!

The final point -- an import, even given all the perfect parameters to the computer, is just a first cut. It's up to you to work from there. If you don't like that brown -- chose another color that works better and change it. There are bound to be confetti stitches that don't look right and you can't see where they came from -- remove them by changing them to a nearby color. It's all in the tweaking. There will be rough edges that you don't see and it's up to you to smooth the contours by changing the colors where needed. That doesn't count adding specialty stitches like backstitches, french knots, half-cross (usually for background)... wherever you think is needed.

This is YOUR project - YOUR pattern. You can't rely on the computer to do it all. It will take work. Even a simple design can take hours to perfect it. A complex pattern (like yours seems to be) can take days. Take the time. You won't be sorry.

Thank you for your reply. I see now that I must have more trust in myself to tweak stitches as I see fit, as the program isn't necessarily always correct, and that I will be improving the pattern.

Oddly, the maximum number of colours I asked it to use was not 300, but 470. I will need to learn more about foreground and background colours.

I tried changing the brand from ANC to DMC, and found that the areas of shadow were significantly better, although they still didn't look perfect; and there were other colours that no longer looked as nice. Perhaps by using threads from both manufacturers I will achieve the best result!?

You can use multiple companies in your pattern but I don't think you can do that on import. That's part of "tweaking".
