I am trying (for the first time) to convert a picture to a pattern. From tutorial 3, I understand how to draw a freehand shape around the area and then clear the inside. However, the explanation for the Similar Color tool is very vague and I can't get it to work. I also tried to copy part of the background and paste it to the cleared area, but the copied part gets moved rather than copied. Are there explanations in more detail for how to do things?

I don't do much imports of an image to a pattern so I don't use the Similar Color tool. I cannot comment on that at this time.

As for copy acting like a move, that us usually a user mistake. Make sure you specify the "copy" tool, not the "cut" tool before your paste. Cut is a move, Copy is as it says - a copy.
