I LOVE using black fabric. But I find that I cannot see the holes that well so I end up starting a project and then putting it off for a long time because it takes so long for me to feel around and find each hole.

The easiest solution would probably be to make the room I cross stitch in brighter, but there is nowhere to put another lamp.

I'm sure there is some solution out there that I haven't thought of yet, so I thought I'd ask everyone here.

I have two cats, and generally sit on the couch during the evenings to stitch. The only time there is good light in here is during the day with the blinds open, but I can't stitch during the day...

So, I'd love to hear some ideas.

Some common suggestions are:

  • Have good lighting above your shoulder directly onto the fabric.

  • Use a white or very light colored fabric (like a towel) UNDER the fabric to highlight the holes.

  • Use a light shining up under the fabric.

  • Use a magnifier to make the holes look bigger.

  • A combination of the above.

I'm doing a project on black myself and find that these tips do work. I'm doing "Fire and Ice" on black with shades of blue and red. The darkest blue blends into the black as if it were black!

The easiest way is to have a white tea towel or pillowcase over your lap,so that the white shows through the holes as you stitch, making it easier on the eyes. I know dragonlair suggested that too (more or less), but I'm confirming it as a good choice. It has the advantage, too, of being able to pack away in an instant!
