I know, I'm the one who seems to be answering everybody else's questions but now I have one.
Is there a way to easily access the update file each time to manually execute rather than using the Update feature of Pro?
There are two reasons for this question.
1: I do not know why but downloading the update file takes FOREVER for me and I'm on broadband!  The last one (to 8.03.05) took 20 minutes to download and install 6.2 Mb. A few days later, I downloaded Hero 3.0 (Beta) from Everett Kaser's site (7.8 Mb) and it took less than 20 seconds.
The few times that Mark has given me a direct link, it has downloaded with comparable speeds to the Kaser example. It just seems to be the upgrade sequence itself. I don't think this occurs with Standard, just Pro.
2: I am looking to upgrade my PC within the next few months. I plan on keeping this old dinosaur (at least temporarily) but we may drop the internet capabilities on it to preserve memory. I'm wondering if there's a way I can download the upgrade file to the NEW computer, copy it to a CD and then load it on this machine for manual execution.
So, is there a way I can do it?  Please, say yes (and tell me how)!

My second reason may not come to pass. This thing is getting so touchy that it is not funny! We may just keep it for older games and "spare parts" when we upgrade. Research in progress on that front!

I'll have to keep that in mind for the next upgrade. I'm getting a new machine (hopefully next week) and that may make a difference in my update situation. I'm going VISTA! (I'm not sure if I should be pitied or congratulated.  )

My first thought would be pity! Vista looks prety much like XP with some really annoying security features to me.
Have you seen the Mac commercial with the "confirm" guy on it? That commercial is funny and pretty much dead on!

There is definitely some funny stuff there!
I have always been a PC guy, but I have a lot of respect for the Mac from an end user perspective. The problem is that there just haven't been enough development tools around to easily create Mac software.

| I'm an IT guy and as such suppport a network of 40+ computers and I only say this to illustrate that I'm tech savy. I have now got my first Vista machine and, yes, there are some annoyances. Anyone who has used MS Word much knows that sometimes the program thinks it knows more than the user and "corrects" things you don't want corrected or puts you into some formatting loop you have to get out of. Vista can and out of the box does much the same thing. However I have found (yes, it is time consuming) that you can turn off almost anything asking you to reaffirm that you really, really want to do the simple task you started, although there are stil a few left that won't disappear. On the plus side, it seems more stable and faster and not really to much different, once you get used to where everything is, than XP pro. All that is just my opinion and I'm sure you'll hear may differing ones. |

Dennis, even XP Pro can be user friendly when you do same you did with Vista.
I can't stand XP Pro with its standard settings, but after few hours of configuring this has worked like a charm almost a year.

I tried the download direct from the site idea. I had to. I have to load the base software from a floppy and with pro, it's not at a high enough level to even try the direct update.
Unfortunately, I had the same problem as with "Update Program". Mark gave me a link once that did the download quickly. This time, the Pro download took over a half hour (I had to use the BIG form). The rate started at about 119 Kb/sec and went down as low as 5.5. Most of it seemed to hover in the teens Kb/sec.
It has to be something at the site. I did other downloads that went so fast that the "Download Complete" window popped up almost before I started the download for over 1 Mb.
I did have one other site that did the same thing yesterday. They had an alternative site to use to download the needed file which worked fine.
Mark, do you have any idea what is wrong? Why do I only have this problem with yours and maybe one or two other sites?
BTW - I downloaded the files but I have not yet installed the new base product.

I got everything installed (both Pro and Standard) and updated using the files I downloaded. Both now say they are at current levels.
I did notice one change to Pro that I like. My previous version was from a download and it said Registered to: on the splash screen every time I started it. Now I get no message, just the picture. The only differences are in operating system and in load methods.
I do have a minor problem. Before I transitioned, I copied the Borders, Libraries, Custom Stitches and Stitched Fonts for both version 7 and version 8 onto a backup and then copied them into place after I installed and updated both programs. I did not over-write any conflicts, I just added the contents from the Pattern Pieces series.
Now, sometimes when I load Pro, I get a notice that old versions are found and do I want to convert them. I at first said no because I had not yet copied all the files. Now I said yes but I keep gettiing errors. If I let it "convert", I get the following error several times. If I don't get the convert message, I get the message once (and every time).
The message:

How do I get rid of these except by clearing the files in Pro and letting it at them all?
I no longer get the "conversion" question and the program seems to continue normally after I "ok" the error. It always appears AFTER the splash screen appears.

There must be a problem with one of the custom stitches files. If you zip them up and send them to me, I will see if I can figure out what the problem is.

I've sent off the email with zipped copies of both levels of Custom Stitches. You should be able to tell which is which within the zip.  It may be several days before I can get back to actually using the product at the moment and it seems to be working otherwise.

One question (I forgot it a minute ago).
I noticed that Vista has .NET 3.0. The upgrade to Pro was so much faster than on ME and there was not mention of .NET when it installed that I'm wondering if it just used the newer version and didn't bother with .NET 2. Is that possible?

From what I understand, .Net 3.0 is a superset of 2.0 with a few things added. If you have 3.0 already installed, the install program should not install 2.0, and Pro will use the newer version.

That does seem to be what happened. I do see NET 1.1 listed and that may be from my initial install of Pro from the CD. I don't see any thing about NET 2.0 but I did see 3.0.
I guess I could have saved myself some download time if I had known that I had 3.0 beforehand.
