Hello everyone. I have had the PC Stitch program for several years. I recently got a new Asus laptop and moved my old files onto and downloaded the PC Stitch program with no problems. I was able to open old pattern files and make new ones and print with no problems. Today, I was able to open the program and select files, but after that the program did not respond any further. I was able to create a new pattern file, but after saving it could not open it again after closing the program. I was able to successfully un-install the program using the Revo Uninstall Program....and then downloaded the program again. Again, I was able to open the program, select files, but when the file was clicked it still would not respond. I would back out using the laptop's end task function each time I tried. It did the same thing when I tried to access the files as an Administrator. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to solve this problem? Your help would be greatly appreciated. |

I know you said you did a revo-uninstall and then reinstalled the program. However, did you reboot the PC in between the two actions? That does sometimes make a difference.
If that does not work, I suggest you email Mark at mmiller@pcstitch.com about the problem. Mark is the only one who can help.
I have never seen the problem but I have heard of it.
Good Luck,

Thank you for your reply. I have tried rebooting and uninstalling. Strangely, Mark was able to open a file I sent him, but I cannot open. I am also able to open some sample files, but not all of them. I will keep playing with it. The data seems to be there.... they just wont communicate. quote: Originally posted by Dragonlair

Hello Diane, To update you. I had my son came over this evening to look at my computer and see if he could figure out the problem. He works in software development for medical equipment. After checking all sorts of things, the final answer turned out to be the last Microsoft update on my computer. When my son uninstalled that update all of my files in PC Stitch ran fine. He reinstalled the update again just to be sure, and sure enough, the files would not open. I asked him to reply to an email I received from Mark and share the various things he looked at in the process and the solution so he will be aware of the issue since other people may experience the problem. Apparently it is not uncommon for this to happen to software and makers then have to fix the bugs so their programs will run with the Microsoft changes. We will have to wait see if it happens again with the next update, but I was so happy to be able to access my projects again. :) quote: Originally posted by Dragonlair

I'll believe it! I've had some odd things appear suddenly with no explanation to find out that Micro$oft has put in a patch ages back but not turned it on and then suddenly it gets turned on.
I remember when people actually had control on what was on their computer. That began to erode after Windows came out. My first software lost to windows was because the "config.sys" file was no longer allowed and I could not use the "files =" command to increase the number of files allowed to be open at a time. It sounds subtle but it was a start.
Now, we can delay but we can't even completely stop updates!

Merata,
Could you tell me the exact code of the Microsoft update that caused the issue? Also, did your son report the problem to Microsoft?

I had my son reply to an email I received from Mark at PC Stitch to tell him exactly what he looked at on my computer and what he did. If you email Mark he should be able to answer any questions you have.
The last thing my son checked was the most recent update from Microsoft in the place where those updates are recorded. The update had taken place in the same time frame as my program problem, so he uninstalled it to see if that was it. I didn't report it to Microsoft because my son said they aren't going to change their programing for individual apps..... they expect apps and programs to come up with their own bug fixes. I still have to wait and see if the problem re-occurs with the next system update.
I am not tech savvy, that is why I had Danny communicate with Mark. It's all Greek to me. In your computer their should be a place where the updates are recorded by date. He went with the most recent one. Since Mark was able to open one of my files, the problem wasn't with the files... it was a new communication problem between the program and the computer itself. So Danny then started asking what may have changed since I finished my last project... and the most likely culprit was an update. The timing of the update and the program problem fit. I think the update was March 10th..... or there abouts... the actual day my computer updated I am not sure... I had finished my project at the end of February and then not used the program again since. I found the problem when I tried looking at an older pattern I had saved for a new project.
I hope that helps. quote: Originally posted by Dragonlair

I don't know what exactly about the update caused the problem. Danny looked at all sorts of files on my computer to see what was going on. Mark may have more of an idea of what changed that interfered with the program operation.quote: Originally posted by Merata

Since Mark has been notified of this issue, I'll let him take it from there. I did the Patch Tuesday update and I've had no problems with PCStitch. Unfortunately, I don't have it installed on my new laptop. I may have to do that to see if that one is also affected.
I say "Patch Tuesday" because Microsoft always issues update/patches on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. You can delay the update but they won't let you totally ignore their updates. They want more and more control over EVERYTHING! The next update is April 14. At least it's before tax time.
