the back stitch fonts are hidden in places by the graph when printing to pdf? how do i fix this? thanks

You can possibly print the backstitches using their color (assuming the color is other than black) or you can print the backstitches using a different form -- like wiggly lines. That might show up better against the grid.

You can also increase the width of the backstitching.
