I can eventually open a .pat but have to go around in circles to get it. A friend will chart me a picture in 11 and send it via e-mail. PC 11 will open but no chart. I then have to wander around to find the chart and open. I've tried saving it to another name and another place but it won't open from there.
What are we doing wrong.

How are you trying to open it?
If the .pat extension is "owned" by PCStitch (an old version of Patternmaker also had a .pat extension and that caused some confusion), then just double-clicking on the file should open PCStitch AND the pattern.
Have you downloaded the pattern or are you trying to open it from the email? That may be an issue -- I've never tried that.
One more point -- is the pattern one that the sender has the authority to send and is not violating copyright? Just because a person has a pattern legitimately, does not necessarily mean they can share that pattern.
Remember -- caring is NOT sharing and sharing is NOT caring! Think about it -- it sounds weird but it's true.

OK, I just did a test chart - alot of scribbled lines and it saved to a .pat. It will not open on a double click. I had to go looking for it. Something is wrong here. Should I re install and where the heck is my license #, LOL |

You're saying that double-clicking on a .pat file opens PCStitch but will not open the file? I've never heard of that!
If a re-install (the unlock key may not be needed) doesn't correct it, I suggest you contact Mark.

That is correct. I just have to be different. I'll delete the program and re-install. Let ya know how it goes. |

Uninstalled. Got a missing Dll warning but it uninstalled. Reinstalled, did the update and registered again. The install was my original from last Dec. Note: version 7 come up fine but the 11 chart sent to me and the one I made don't come up on a double click. Don't know if the program was doing this when I got it because I was opening older charts. |

I thought I was the one to find really weird problems! I'm famous for that.
I suggest you contact Mark at mmiller@pcstitch.com for this problem.
Are you getting any kind of error message?

No error message from 11 but I can't get the control panel to delete 7. Thought there might be a conflict there. And now when I click on one of the new 11 charts I get a big error message. Click on PC 11 and I get the blank picture and can then find that same chart no problem |

PCStitch 7 and PCStitch 11 are, by default placed in different folders. You should be able to have both side-by-side with no problems. The only issue is that 7 won't load patterns created by 11 but 11 will load those for 7. In fact, it can save in 7 format.
I myself have 10 and 11 both installed for help purposes. I only use 11 but I do still get some questions for 10 and load it up to check out the problem if I can. I do have 7, 8, and 9 as well but not installed. They're too old. PCStitch 7 dates back to 2004!

Those series of pattern motif additions and alphabets that were based on PCStitch 6 and 7 are PART of PCStitch 11 and PCStitch 10. That should not be an issue. If you created a pattern using those motifs in 7, they should be accepted in 11.
I first got them with PCStitch 8 and had a lot of trouble with some of them. I ended up going through my registry and clearing out anything from PCStitch (and M&R tech) to finally get them working and that was working closely with Mark the whole time! They work MUCH better as built-in motifs.
However, I have heard of cases where someone creates a pattern using those motifs and then someone else can't load them for copyright reasons because of the motifs. I don't remember the details. Just OPENING the motifs, even if you don't use any can cause issues in some cases. I think this was with 10 and may have been corrected in 11.

Haven't done anything with the motifs in ages. Maybe I should get rid of them off this computer. I have the disks for them. I did delete 11 , download a new one and tried. Everything is the same. & charts will pop up but not 11. And no word from Mark. I suspect the registry myself but hesitate to play there. This is not an emergency just annoying. Like the fact the search part of this computer can't find my name if It was in a folder |

I FIXED IT!!!! Fighting tooth and nail to get this computer to delete 7, It finally deleted it. Thinking "whoop-D-Do" I click on my scribbled test chart. It came up. And so did the others! Gonna hold my breath to see if it works tomorrow And clean my chair. May have peed my pants in the excitement

I think I still have the set of disks, too - I think there were 12 of them. I don't want to play with them now since most install a stripped down version of 6 when you install them and it's now part of the base product now so you don't need them.
Congratulations! I'm now thinking that it wasn't PCStitch 7 that caused the problem but, more likely, those wonky old installs of the libraries. When you got rid of 7, with nothing else installed that used those libraries, they went as well.
BTW - what version of Windows are you running? I wonder if 7 will run under Win 10 since it was released in 2004! That means most of those pattern libraries are even older. A lot of the problems I had with the libraries was back with Vista so who knows what's going on now!
I am running 10 and 11 under Windows 7 and I do have 11 installed on 8.1 for testing purposes. I don't use the laptop very much.
