Hi All, I have read on this forum that there is no such thing as a dumb question - I believe that I am about to break that thought. This is a first time post for me. I have been a lurker for about three years now.
I am hoping that someone can give me some advice on how to import a pattern that is in ".PDF format". Let me explain. I purchased a few patterns online that were emailed to me in PDF format. The symbols in the pattern are all different from those in Stitch and I can't import it into PC Stitch anyway. I would dearly love to get the pattern onto PC Stitch as I use the 'Highlight Entry" feature in Stitch. The patterns are fairly large and I have already manually entered one pattern into Stitch [all 47 pages]It's not a task I want to repeat if I can avoid it. ANY suggestions or help would be hugely appreciated.
Many thanks in advance Lyn |

No, you do not have a stupid question. You didn't know so you asked. That makes it a very legitimate question.
A stupid question (and I now admit, they are possible -- usually by husbands) would be like the time he called me on the phone (long before the days of cellphones) and asked me if I was home! Duh! How else could I answer the phone? To give him credit, what he meant to ask was if I planned to STAY home because he was expecting a call.
To get back to the question: I am sorry but it is just not possible.
A pdf formatted file is basically a "snapshot" of each part of the pattern. It is a picture. That is why when you zoom in on a page, the symbols tend to blur.
PCStitch is a coded representation of the pattern that is transformed into the graphical display you see by interpreting that code for each stitch and color. It will not blur no matter how much you zoom into it. It just interprets the code and takes the zoom factor into consideration to display the clear symbol in the correct size.
The closest you might get would be to use each page of the existing pattern, one at a time as an "underlayment" so you could manually place the correct symbols on top the older version of the pattern. That would require you to split your pattern into a lot of separate JPG files which requires software such as PDF Core (free) to first split the file and then to convert it. That would be almost more work than to manually enter the pattern into PCStitch.
I know it's tedious but entering a pattern into PCStitch to get the features of the product is sometimes the only way to go! Play some pleasant music in the background while you work and it can actually progress rapidly.
Good Luck!

Thank you for taking the time to explain a possible answer to my dilemma. I kind of figured that the fix would be more work [or almost as much ] as the problem. I sort of get what you are saying, but haven't tried it. I could run it by my 'TECH-IE' husband who is in 'I.T', but I think that would probably be just as painful. Waiting for him to get around to it. My computer is like a mechanic's car. Always on the never-never list. There's a reason he fits in so well here in WA [Western Australia]. 'WA' stands for 'Wait Awhile' - Wait until I get around to it. LOL.
Anyway I have resigned myself to having fun watching the picture develop as I manually re-draw it. Will take your advice though, and put on some good music and the kettle.
Many thanks however. Lyn |

Lyn,
Around here, hubby and I are BOTH techies. We both have over 30 years experience with computers from the low level PCs and tablets to the BIG main frames (low level is more recent). We have long discussions on how to organize this or that on the machines and what to put on and what to take off. It's fun (for us).
I realize that most people don't understand much of what's going on. That's why I try to explain what is happening rather than just strictly answer the question. The answer makes a lot more sense with some "why" behind it. As for the "how" - I don't know myself and really don't care. As long as the computer does what I tell it to do (rather than what I want it to do); I'm happy!

I am having an issue with my import too, it has alot of text in it and the picture is clear but when I import it looks muddy and I can not get it to look right. It has alot of text so very hard to have to put it all in later |

What you see is normal. What you see and what the computer sees is totally different. You may see discrete lines of black for the text but the computer sees pixel by pixel (you can't see that fine) and that results in the "muddy" look. that can be minimized (but not completely) by making the picture you are importing the same dimensions in pixels as your final design is in stitches -- such as 112 X 140 for an 8 X 10 inch design at 14 stitches/inch.
That is why "tweaking" is such an important part of any design project like this. The computer will never give you the best possible pattern. You have to take that raw attempt and make it the "best" that you can do for your purposes.

Amber, Lynwill's post was over 2 1/2 years ago. I doubt you'll hear back. Also, this board does not have PM. It has email but you must have 5 posts before you can use email and she doesn't have enough. You can email her for more information but that's about it.

You can't see her email. You can click to send her an email. She has to have one to register. However, in the time since she last posted, it may have changed.
Note - you can't see her email unless she responds to your message but she will be able to see your email address from the start.
