Until recently all of my cross stitching has been the "go to the craft store and get a kit" variety. A couple of projects I've seen in some magazines use 28 count cloth but stitch the pattern over two threads. I'm assuming this gives you the same effect stitch-wise as using 14 count cloth. Is that correct?

Also, why use 28 count cloth instead of 14 count cloth? Is it just a style choice? And would you need a different needle for 28 count cloth than for 14 count cloth? The holes are smaller but the floss is the same size so I don't know which would be the determining factor there.

Casey,

You are correct that 28 count over two is the same as 14 count. However, the difference is in the material itself. If you use 28 count over 2, you have a natural hole in the middle to help with fractionals. If you have a lot of them, it is a BIG help!

Also, the look is different. 28 count appears smoother and less "blocky" because the holes are closer together and it looks more uniform.

It is mainly a selection of preference. If a pattern "recommends" 28 count and you feel more comfortable with 14 count, then use 14 count. After all, it is the fun of doing it and you should use what you WANT to use!

Thanks Diane. I really appreciate your reply. 28 count does feel more "presentational" than 14 count. But then 14 count feels more "country charming". definately something to consider. Thanks again.
