First of all, there is a method the program has to remind you to save your work after a given amount of time. I believe the default is 30 minutes. It's a good idea because anything could happen - such as a power failure.
Also, if it has been saved more than once then there is a .bpt form of the previous save. Every time you save after the first time, the .pat is renamed to .bpt and a new .pat is created. The old .bpt file is gone.
If you have a .bpt, you can rename it to .pat and you will only have lost part of your work.
No matter what you do - it is a good idea to create backups from time to time or let your software do it for you. I have seen for myself horror stories of professionals who have been burned because they didn't want to take the time to back up their data part way.

The problem is this was a saved pattern! I save my progress every 2 rows. cuz I check for errors. I went to save and the whole entire pattern is gone except for the .bpt and I cannot excess it. it will not open. |

If you have a .bpt file, don't try to open it directly. In Windows Explorer, right click on the file name and select "Rename" (or press F2). Hit the "End" button, back up 3 places (removing the bpt) and type "pat". You don't get a prompt to do this. You do it from Windows Explorer. If you have a menu/desktop option for "Computer" or your username, that is Windows Explorer.

reeree1,
Please email the bpt file to me at email removed I'll see if I can get it converted to a .pat for you and then send it back. I make no promises.
Also, in a week or so, I will remove my email address from this post.

as Diane said,
open your windows explorer, not the web viewer.
in the left pane you'll see all your folders, hightlight Computer, then in top right of the screen in the little tab for search type *.bpt, you should then see all your saved files with that extension *.bpt. You'll then be able to rename it. I know this works as I've just tried a sample file.
Good luck |

I got her pattern and saw where she was making a problem. Windows does not normally highlight the extension when you do a rename. You have to manually go out and change that. Even then, it get's a bit ticked at you and warns that the file may become unusable if it is renamed. Just tell it that you do mean to make the change and it does do it.
I was able to change the extension with no problem.
However, I did forget one thing that should be mentioned here. You should never send a "raw" .pat file as an attachment to/from a Yahoo address. I have no idea what Yahoo does but the file often becomes corrupted if emailed with Yahoo. The solution is to put it in a zip file and send that. Yahoo leaves zips alone. I discovered the problem a couple of years ago working with the developer of myriaCross. We were finding some of the samples corrupted and finally realized it was Yahoo doing the corrupting!

Without knowing what the error was, there is little anybody can do after the fact. You did report it and that was good. You need to become a bit more comfortable with Windows and such are the renames to avoid the problem. You can also make a copy of a file before you modify it so you can use that as a backup as well.
To make a copy, right click on the file and select copy. Then move the mouse to an open area in the same folder area, right click and select paste. It will create a copy of the file and include the string "copy" as part of the file name. Those are easier to rename if needed. A normal rename will work since you're not trying to change the extension.

The same thing has happened to me. I was working on a pattern that I'd created a few months ago and when I hit to save I get a message that it can't be saved and the .pat file doesn't exist!
Oh great, I just sold this pattern to a magazine and now I no longer have anything but the .bpt file. What happened and how do I create a new .pat file from the .bpt. Yes, I did read what went before on this topic, but can't determine if this is indeed possible and if so how do I do it?

bpt files are simply the backup file. If you have auto-backup turned on, it shouldn't be that old. All you need to do is rename that file from .bpt to .pat and it's your main file. If you have a .pat file showing, check the last modified date. Use the newer to get back where you were.
If you have a .bpt file, you haven't lost EVERYTHING!

Thanks for the reply, however my question remains unanswered.
How does one 'rename' the file so that the format changes? Right clicking on a file then hitting 'rename' only renames the file, it doesn't change the format so how is that done, please?

When you do a rename from windows, you can rename the extension (the part after the dot). You will get a warning that changing that may make the file unusable. Just say yes that you mean to do the change.
If you don't have the file extension showing, you need to select that from the folder options (normally Tools > Folder Options > View). I leave it on all the time and suppress the column of "type" from the Windows Explorer display.
When you do a rename, the extension is not highlighted for change by default but it can be changed.
Note -- I tried to open a .bpt in the latest PCStitch (11) and it opens PCStitch but does not open the file so, at least for 11, you do need to do the rename.
