Hi. I'm looking for sources that would help me with general principles of design, as well as those devoted specifically to needlework. I was quite "artistic" as a child and teen, but those talents have been dormant for more years than I care to admit! I'm thinking along the lines of proportion, color, balance; any historical "rules" for samplers, specialty stitches, etc. My current interest is in using quotations by famous authors combined with sampler-type stitches or illustrations. Any suggestions out there? Thanks!

Hi Becky

Have a look at all the wonderful collections in museums around the world- fantastic source of ideas; there are some fantastic blogs out there too.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 'rules', just do what you think looks right - if you've got the artistic spirit, you will instinctively know about proportion and balance. There are so many different styles, just enjoy looking and pick what you like!!!

I just love old samplers; great images for ideas can also be found on auction sites (not just internet auctions). I also look for old needlework books at markets; old patterns in museums - you never know what you will find. Have fun!

I moved this thread to a more appropriate forum since it's not directly related to PCStitch. My only suggestion is to google and maybe you can get sources for help that way.
