Posted - 11/01/2007 : 20:32:32 I decided to try again. I had downloaded Pattern Viewer before but was unable to get it to release it's control of the .pat files. I tried it again today because the monthly freebie from POL is in .pvf format. However, the file is HUGE!
The free pattern was 1243 kb in size. It is only one color and that is used as outlines. There is a display page that shows the completed pattern and the pattern itself. There is not even a key because the design only uses one color. I cannot understand why the file is so big.
Just for comparison I converted the .pvf file to Adobe's .pdf format by printing (PrimoPDF). That file is only 91 Kb. That is a reduction of almost 93%. Why??
The sample file "Tempest" (TW's Tempest in a Tea Cup") is far smaller. It's only 192 Kb and is 27 colors (mostly blends) It reduces to 88 Kb (over 50%).
As a side note - I was able to get PCStitch PRO to regain control of the .pat extension and retain the normal icon using a strange procedure but it worked.
In my opinion, the biggest drawback of Pattern Viewer is the extreme size of the files. If I can get that much reduction using the simple print to pdf, why would I want it in .pvf format?
