Hi, this may be a dumb question but does anyone know if it is considered "copyright infringement" to make a cross stitch pattern from a photo?
For example, my daughter's nursery is in "little Suzy's Zoo" I haven't been able to find cross stich patterns so we bought a coloring book and I scaned some of the pages-underlayed them and created my own pattern...
So is this legal/illegal? Does anyone know?
If anyone has any info on this that would be great...I don't want to be doing something I shouldn't be doing without knowing it is wrong..
Thanks!

Renee,

I'm talking about the pattern. Giving the final product is OK, especially to family. Just don't sell the finished stitching. I'm sorry I confused the issue I was trying to clarify!

Just because you can download an image free on the internet does NOT mean it's free of copyright. There are an awful lot of copyright infringing images out there!

In one sense, what you want to do is better than the download scenario. You PURCHASED the coloring book. Therefore you do have some rights to it. As long as you don't sell what you are making and don't sell the patterns you create to do the stitching, I don't think there is a problem.

This is a VERY complicated situation

Ok. When you say don't give them to anyone, what about my daughter? That's who I'm making them for-so she'll have them for her nursery.
I was going to make things for her to hang on the wall, as well as diaper bag, ect... just all the nursery stuff... Do you know if that is ok?
Where does a person go to find out things like this?
Someone else told me that if the pics were availble free (i.e. free downloads from web) then it's not illegal.. just didn't know if coloring books are included...
Oh and I didn't make my patterns exactly like the coloring book, I took different images and combined them to create a scene...

Well, guess it's better to find out now before I spend anymore time creating/sewing if it ends up being wrong...
Thanks!!!

Renee,

Cross Stitch Patterns of "Little Suzy's Zoo" characters are common. You might check Janlynn. They used to have some.

As for what you did: It is probably OK so long as you do not give your patterns to anybody, EVER. If you give them to someone, you will definitely be violationg the copyright.
