Is anyone out there using PCStitch Pro as their only cross-stitch program? When I purchased it, I deleted my older version and transferred all my patterns to the new one. Now I'm finding that many of the patterns and libraries must be reworked, since the symbols are not the same as the original ones that I used. Once patterns are saved in PCStitch Pro, they are no longer readable in older versions, so reloading my old program won't help.
The new symbols seem to be selected all in a row from the symbol selector, so that they all resembe each other too much, eg. all versions of circles and squares. Is there any way to deal with the symbols problem other than changing each individual symbol?
Also, is there any way to change all the symbols to a different font, eg. from Arial to PCStitch symbols, without doing them individually?
I have a lot of my own patterns that were affected by this problem, and it's driving me crazy! Can anyone help? |

Casey - thank you! I didn't test it with my pat files as I've got them working right now. However, that trick allowed me to change the icon for the .bpt files! I tried another user's idea a few minutes ago and it didn't work because I didn't have the advanced option there. Your trick did work. Thanks!

You should be able to get the icon back by simply editing the file type (in Windows Explorer click Tools > Folder Options then click the File Types tag) and changing the icon to the PCSPat.ico file in the Misc folder of wheerver you installed the program. It's a pain but it's fairly quick. |

The problem isn't the extension but the format within the extension (Version 7, Pro, PatternMaker) and who has "control" over that extension. I do back up my data on a routine basis. Also every time you save a file, the file you have loaded is renamed to .bpt and a new .pat is created. You do need to do save-as or change the extension yourself to have more than one "generation" back.

Hi everyone,
I just joined this list and have been reading the posts. No one has mentioned backing up their files. Wouldn't that help the problems you are having with file extensions? I hope this helps.

Terry, not neccessarily! You can "export" from Pro to Standard and so use Pro to create files that version 7 will open. That's what I do to save space. The version 7 files are an average of about 1/3 of the size of the Pro files. Also, once you get Pro installed, you can remove that folder in "My Documents". For me it's just wasted space as I store my files elsewhere.

Diane: I really don't mind having version 7 as the default. It makes it easier for me since anything in PC Stitch 7 will load into Pro but anything that starts in Pro stays in Pro. |

I think you were saying that PCStitch 7 is the default for .pat files. That is my problem. I don't want it to be the default. I want Pro to be the default.
Also, I have PatternMaker (viewer only) and I have convinced it to leave the .pat files alone. If I get a .pat that is Patternmaker, I rename it to .xms just to avoid the confusion. It may be an older version of PatternMaker but it is happy to load it anyway. The only thing that gets upset with the name change is Windows. It always makes me confirm the request.

I still have PC Stitch 7 loaded along with Pro and it is the default when I download .pat files. I still use it occasionally. I used to have a copy of pattern maker but the confusion with .pat files was too much to handle so I deleted it. |

I agree. I much prefer PCStitch Pro in just about every way. However, I didn't realize that it would be so different that I would have to rework patterns to make them easily readable.

I still have version 7 loaded but I rarely use it. With Pro, you can "export" it into "Standard" (meaning version 7) format so you can load it with version 7. Some of the extra features (such as petite stitches or pattern objects) are lost in the export but the files are much smaller.
I have not had a problem with symbol changes. It is possible that the older patterns were created using a different font. Since Pro allows you to define your symbols using differnt fonts at the same time, I don't know if there is a way of changing all the symbols at one time. Maybe that's something that needs to be added!
There are three reasons I rarely load version 7. One is I love the editing environment of Pro. It is far superior to 7 in my opinion. A second reason is I HATE that default folder that is created in "My Documents". I never use it. I always put my files elsewhere. As in the case of Pro, Version 7 doesn't need it. I always defaults to where you last saved/loaded a pattern.
The third reason I rarely load 7 is it "steals" the .pat extension from Pro when I do and it is a pain to get it to reset to Pro! That's also why I won't load PatternViewer even if it does handle other craft patterns. PatternViewer also steals the extension and I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to release it without losing the little PCStitch icon marking the .pat files.
