Hello, my name is Heather and I have been a lurker for about six months and enjoy making patterns. The problem I have is the format in which the PDF's are finalized in. I asked the artecy website owner what program they use to finalize their patterns because I would like for mine to be the same way and they use PrimoPDF but I have also seen others use different programs. Either way even with Primo I can't get it to work. The layout I would like is (free pattern, I hope its ok to link here) http://www.artecy.com/minitexasflagArtecy.pdf and would like for someone who knows how to walk me through the process with set by set instructions, please.
Thank you for your time,
Heather

What are you using for printing? Are you using the Print option or the Export option. I do not understand what you mean of a pattern on top of a photo. I know of nothing that will do that.

You are correct, "merge" means combining the pages of one PDF file with the pages of another. Or, you can convert and merge together -- such as a series of jpg files into a single PDF file. I have a product that will split/merge and all sorts of things with PDF files. I often use it to split out unneeded pages of a file to make it smaller.

I have PC Stitch 11 for Windows & I have tried printing to FoxIt (I previously had a pre-installed "Save to PDF" option as a "printer" choice, and that didn't work, so I tried FoxIt). I get the grid, but no symbols and no photo underlayment. I have seen suggestions about a PDF "merger," but it sounded as if that was referring to merging multiple pages into one file. I'm just trying to print a pattern that is a grid on tip of a photo. Help?

Iris,

That's one of many pdf creator/printer products out there. I use Foxit instead of Adobe general because I object to all the "hooks" Adobe has and the resources it needs. Foxit has a much lighter footprint.

PrimoPDF used to be the product of choice until I tried to put it on my laptop. It was such a headache to get rid of all the "add-ons" included in the install including some coming in as others were being removed that I refuse to have anything to do with it -- including removing where I had it successfully installed for years! I then discovered that Foxit's virtual printer was much FASTER and better!

I also use the "print" to PDF as a method of shrinking the size of some PDFs. It's amazing how much a print can reduce the size without changing the appearance at all! it doesn't always work but does at least 75% of the time.

Don't know if you've found your answer to the PDF format, but here's an easy alternative. Cutepdf. It installs on your computer as a Printer and when you're finished with your PC Stitch pattern and want it in PDF form simply choose Cutepdf and print. Easy.

First -- make sure you copy onto multiple flashdrives -- even if you keep on the PC. Flashdrives can go bad, as can CDs, DVDs, SDcards, and even hard drives! You should always regularly back up important data.

Back to the question -- yes, I suggest both PDFCore and Foxit. Foxit can be used to make PDFs either directly or by printing. You may also need a word processor for the descriptions and instructions and a graphics program to make that cover sheet with the picture of the completed pattern and any other notes.

I've not done what you're doing but it is complex and you need to do each part separately, using whatever software is best for that part. Use Foxit's virtual printer to make PDFs out of everything and then PDFCore to merge them all together into a single file (always called "merged.pdf". Just rename the file after it's created.

Good Luck,

Diane

I recently bought a thumb drive I can load all of my charts and pictures onto to save my pc some room. I wish PCStitch offered something similar to what I am looking for.
So you think I need PDF Core AND Foxit to get the layout I'm looking for?

PDFCore is NOT a PDF Printer. What I use as a PDF Printer is Foxit. It's an Adobe clone that has a virtual printer within it that hooks to other devices.

PDFCore is a separate product used for merging and splitting PDFs as well as other things. I use it as a splitter all the time -- pages you don't need and keep the pages you do need. I can save a lot of storage space on your PC.

I'm not sure if you should link that PDF, free or not, but I did look at it.

First of all, I don't think that's a PCStitch pattern. I think it's PatternMaker based on the last page.

The non-pattern pages (cover page, description) are made separately and you need a program to merge multiple files together. I use PDF Core to merge multiple PDFs into a single file.

I used to use PrimoPDF but stopped and removed where I was using it when I had so much trouble installing it on my laptop. It added so much garbage that I had a very hard time getting it all out. Some kept coming back as I was trying to remove others. I was so mad that I removed it where it was working and refuse to recommend it now.

How you create the PDF is beside the issue anyway. It's just a "virtual printer". You just make sure the individual parts format the way you want and then use something like PDFCore to merge them into a single PDF.

It's really just plugging along.

Good Luck,

Diane
