I have imported pictures and click on the button for the multicolor auto backstitch but nothing happens. Anyone have any suggestions?

The way the auto-backstitch around multiple colors is not that there are multiple colors of backstitching. It's still all the currently selected color but it's used around an entire area.

You need to first set the "stitch selection" to the arrow and mark the part of the pattern that you wish to backstitch. THEN select the auto-backstitch tool.

Note, the area you select must be a complete circuit. If the auto-backstitch cannot go around it (non-stitched areas beyond), it will give an error message about it not being an object.

Once you select the color to use for backstitching, set the cursor to the arrow, mark your area and then select the auto-backstitch. Then click within the stitched area of what is to be backstitched.
