I searched back several levels for a thread re: my problem but didn't see it so here goes.
I have numerous .PAT files I've downloaded that I have saved in different folders. Most, of course are Ver. 7. I also have a few that I've created myself since I installed Pro 9. If I want to open a file to look at it without opening the program first I now have to associate it with one of the programs. First of all I never had to do this before. This is recent. I would just double-click the .PAT file I wanted to open and version 7 would open. Now each time I get a message like the following: K:\Patterns\PC Stitch\angel.pat is not a valid WIN32 application. So since I know that file is a Ver. 7 .PAT file I just go to "Open With" to associate it that version of the program. I can also open it in the original PRO (that I like to call Ver. 8). I can live with this. Now if I try to open a file that I created in Pro 9, I get the same WIN32 application message and the association list shows all 3 versions of the program that I have installed but when I go to associate it with Pro 9 (the program it was created in) I get that same WIN32 application message. I also notice in the list of "associated" files, Pro 9 is the only one listed without the classic "red icon" folder. The folder is one of those generic windows types. That I totally don't understand. Now remember, I don't have a problem opening any .PAT files in Pro 9 or any other version for that matter unless it's an original Pro 9 file and of course it won't open in either earlier version.
Troy/Diane - I hope I made some sense. If you need to know, my operating system is Windows XP Pro. I've been using it for years. I've also been using computers since the late 80's and I'm no mental midget when it comes to computers but this one has me stumped. If either of you have any clue as to why this error message is popping up and why the association to Pro 9 doesn't work I'm happy to hear it.

For the longest time, every time you opened 7 for any purpose, it "stole" the .PAT extension from Pro. If you have a slightly older version of 7, you may still have that problem and it may be a cause of your current situation. Therefore, the first thing you should do is to be sure you have the latest version of 7. That should stop the leaching.
After that, I suggest a re-install of Pro 9. It may correct the problem as well as set 9 as the default association.
If you do have to set the association, do not use the list of programs offered, use the browse option and traverse the folder tree to find the PCStitch Pro folder and executable. That should work as well as provide the correct icon for your files.
I have never seen your problem before. I never used XP. I jumped from ME to Vista. This is just some ideas based on what I have seen before. I hope it works.

All versions are up-to-date. I check for updates each time I open an application. As for Pro 9, if I reinstall will I need a new unlock code? |

FYI - I just went in using the browse option re-add Pro 9 in the associated files list and when I selected it it opened in Ver. 8 which immediately gave me a message box that I would need to upgrade to the newest version of Pro to open that file. So that attempt at associating with Pro 9 took me straight to Ver. 8. Do I need to uninstall Ver. 8 before I reinstall 9? |

When I upgraded to 9, I over-wrote (installed to the same location) as 8. There may be some confusion if you have both. I would recommend you uninstall 8 and then re-install 9. You should not have to re-do the unlock code. From what I understand, it should still be known. Your problem looks like a confusion over 8 and 9. I never tried that. I could see no reason to keep 8 when I went to 9. I keep 7 because it's a totally different environment and I occasionally have to answer questions based on it. I DO NOT have any earlier versions - just one Standard and one Pro.

I uninstalled Ver. 8 and reinstalled Pro 9. I was able to associate a .pat file created in Pro 9 to Pro 9 once then after that it disappears again no matter how many times I "browse" for the application. Do I now need to uninstall Pro 9 and then reinstall it?
Sorry this is taking so long but it is very confusing. |

Terry,
There's an option when you do the association to have it become the "default". Make sure that is checked. You shouldn't have to do it more than once (to set the default). If that doesn't work, then you should try the uninstall/reinstall step. That should set it for you.
