From page 59 of the PDF manual available, the import wizard can accept most image file formats except for such as GIF and TIF because they contain compression features. The most common file type used is JPG.
Files with an extension of PDF are not image files and therefore cannot be used.
As for actual patterns, only PAT files that are PCStitch can be used. Some older PatternMaker files are also called PAT but they are not the same format.
