I have been trying to take a pattern and flip it vertically and it doesn't want to do it. I outline the whole pattern with the selection tool and then try to create a mirror image but it doesn't seem to want to do it. What am I doing wrong?

The mirror image tool doesn't work that way. To create the mirror the way you do are describing, you design half the pattern, mark it (select), select Copy and then Paste and then (with the paste still selected), flip horizontal. Then place the flipped copy to where you want it and set it.

The mirror image tool is totally different. You mark you center point and as you design on part, the other part designs automatically. I've never been comfortable with it so I don't us it. I use the first method. It works fine for me.
