I am wondering about the 1/2 stitch feature. I see where there are two icons that seem to be for 'upper left' 1/2 stitch and 'lower left' 1/2 stitch. Well... what if you need to do an 'upper right' and/or 'lower right' half stitch? Am I missing something here? Also, when you indicate a half stitch on your pattern, and then view your pattern in 'symbols' mode, it sure doesn't look like a half stitch. So I'm not sure what that's all about. Any advice here? Thanks so much for your patience - I seem to be full of questions this week...! But I'm learning a LOT!

later...

Oh my... I think I just answered my own question. You need to use the 3/4 icon - not the 'half' stitch icon. I was confusing myself... so sorry!!

There are "smart quarter" and "smart 3/4" stitches but no "smart half" stitches. You do have to select which direction the half is done. the quarter and 3/4 stitchers you just click in the "base" corner. It's not always easy to aim the mouse. You may need to zoom in a bit. For 14 count, I usually use a zoom of 200 for most of my stitches. If I'm doing a lot of strange backstitch, I may zoom in closer and I also zoom out if I want to get an overall view.
