excuse my question if it's staggeringly daft, but, when choosing floss, how do I choose, say, DMC (normal range) plus metallic or satin. At the moment I'm having fun with one category at a time, but there will be a time when I'd like to add a bit of metallic to my normal floss

Any pattern can have floss from many different companies or types within a company. Each floss has a symbol so if you want DMC cotton and DMC Lin and Kreinik Metallic for eaxmple NO problem. Just select each one, define a symbol for it and use it! The pattern has different prefix codes for each company and the numbers are all distinct within a company.

It's not a problem at all! Using beads, floss, blending filament, metallics, rayon ..... all within a single pattern is not that unusual!
