Importing images is not as straightforward as it seems. The images is in pixels and working with inches is not usually the way to look at it.
What is normally done to create the most satisfactory patterns is to know approximately what size (in inches) you wish the final product to be and what count fabric you wish to use. Multiply the width & length by that count will tell you the size of the image you need for optimal results. You want an image with those dimensions IN PIXELS. That will give you an import with one pixel to 1 stitch. This gives the highest quality mapping and image. Remember you will still have to adjust or tweak the image to get it just as you want.
As for crochet, it's a similar issue. You know your gauge you wish to work with. You know the size you wish. Just make the image in pixels that size. In this case, the image may look TINY but will be the best case. It may say cross-stitch but you can still use the pattern in any craft that can be done using a graph. You just have to watch for fractionals and specialty stitches.
