I found that if you click a sequence of options (will describe in a min) the select option automatically becomes your mouse. This is irritating, but troublesome if you are not expecting it. I can now get this error to happen on queue.
Sequence:
1. Click the Paint option
2. Click the Color Picker then pick up a color
3. Click the Paint option (to deselect it)
4. You are now in Selection Tool

Anna,
A lot of the options put you in the selection tool as a result. It has always been that way. Could it be that the pick-up color puts you in the selection tool and the re-click on paint doesn't take it away?
I just did a test. I tried your sequence. It stayed as stitch when I clicked on Paint. It changed to Selection when I clicked on Pick-Up Color. It changed BACK to stitch when I clicked on paint again.
That is just what I expect. When you use the keystroke shortcut (for me, Alt-Right) to select the color, the mode does not change.
