What happened?

I was almost finished with a pattern this evening. I should have saved it just before I tried to adjust the edges but I didn't. I was trying to remove several columns from the end and then I was going to add some rows and recenter. I always like two rows/columns around my stitching. It just looks better to me.

I inadvertently hit Add columns instead of Remove columns. I tried to "undo" that and got a page of errors about being out of bounds. I did not take a screen print of the errors. Then I tried to remove the columns and got an out of bounds error. I was trying to figure out what was happening and I suddenly got a small window with no message. It just had an "ok" button at the bottom. It would not go away. I clicked "OK" and it blinked, sounded a little bell and came back. I had to use the Task Manager to shut down the program. Vista insisted the program was waiting for me (it was but wouldn't accept any entry from me).

I could do absolutely nothing. Nothing worked while that window was there and it would not go away.

What kind of error did I find? I do not think I want to try to reproduce it at this time. I lost about an hour's work because I had to go back to the .bpt file. The .pat file was corrupted and gave me a message about reading past the end of stream and then an error 5 (with no design showing). I renamed the .bpt to .pat to get back to where I was before that session!

Thanks!

The latest version does fix this problem as well as the problem I discovered with the specialty stitches.

I still think it was odd that the problem only affected removing columns. Removing rows (when backstitches hit the sides) didn't product the problem.

I still have no clue as to the non-error-message error. I think that was just so confused it didn't know what to do. If it happens again, I'll try to remember exactly what happened and get some screen shots. I hope I NEVER have to do that!

I'll be sending off the test pattern in a minute. I got it to fail in a small (25 X 25 grid, one color) sample. Oddly enough, when I added backstitching to go the full width, I could remove the rows. It only fails if I have backstitching the full height and try to remove columns.

I hope it's an easy fix.

Diane,

I tried this with a small test pattern, and it worked ok for me. Can you email me the pattern so that I can use it to debug the problem?

Thanks.

I figured out part of the problem but not the non-error-message error.

I have discovered that you cannot remove any columns if you have a backstitch line in the first and last row. It may be either but I had both.

My pattern at the time I was working on it was the full height of the grid and there were several backstitch lines on top and bottom. Once I added the spacer rows that I like and centered it vertically so there were no longer any backstitches on the edges, I was able to remove the colunns. I no longer got an "Index out of bounds of the array" message.

I did get a screen dump of this error, Mark. If you want, I can email it to you. I don't have any way of attaching it to this post.

This time, I was smarter! I double saved every time I saved and I saved more often.

A single save will (in effect) rename your "old" file to .bpt and create a new .pat. By double-saving, both bpt and pat files should be identical! I didn't lose my data this time.

I did not get the other error and it did not corrupt my file or hang my software.

However, if you are going to allow backstitches along the edges, this error should NOT occur. (just my two cents! )

I suspect a similar error will occur if you tried to remove rows and had the backstiching along the sides but I have not tested it.
