We own a PC Stitch 6. After many attempts over the years, I've never been able to SIZE the photographs correctly, so I have not used any patterns from this amazing program. My final result on one of the patterns is 42 PAGES! I know that's not correct! Ha! But, alas, I found this site!

Are there any SIMPLE, DETAILED instructions on SIZING A PHOTOGRAPH that could be e-mailed to me?

My desire is to create a 8x14 or 16x20 cross stitch pattern from a photograph with these dimensions: 200 pixels wide, 151 pixels high with a resolution of 144 pixels/inch (PAINT.NET).

Thank you for any assistance!

I don't know what effect the DPI has but, if anything, the lower the DPI, the better you are if you don't resize. If you have resized it, that's meaningless since you have 1 pixel to one stitch.

If you have a high DPI and don't resize it, there are far more pixels within the "range" of each stitch in the final result that has to be coordinated and figured out by the software. That is why the one pixel/stitch ratio works best. It doesn't have to figure out what color is "best" among a large group -- it's just one pixel so USE that color!

so what about the dpi of a picture, how does it effect the quality of the pattern?

I made 2 patterns from the same picture, one was just what ever size the picture was, the 2nd I made the picture the size that I wanted my pattern to be. There was a big difference in the patterns. The resized one being much better.

That is why I am wondering about the dpi :-)

The best patterns come from images that are the same dimensions in pixels as the pattern will be in stitches -- that is, 1 pixel to one stitch.

200 X 151 pixels would make (at 14 count) a pattern 14.25 X 10.75 inches.

I recommend you download Irfanview (it's free) from http://www.irfanview.com/

There is an option under the "images" menu option where you can keep the aspect ratio and just give either of width or height dimensions and it will set the other and resize the image. You must save the resized image (recommend to new name to preserve the original for further changes. I would also recommend you use the color correction option in that same menu to correct the picture before you save it and then import it.
